While some will continue into further education, others may be looking for other career opportunities that offer both experience and professional development such as becoming an apprentice.An apprenticeship can be a great way to gain workplace skills, earn recognised qualifications and build confidence in a professional environment.To give an insight into what an apprenticeship looks like in practice, we spoke to Joshua Branwhite, PG Paper’s Modern Apprentice:Meet Joshua: PG Paper’s Modern ApprenticeMy name is Joshua, I’m 18 years old and I joined PG Paper in November 2025 as a Modern Apprentice.I mainly work with the PG Paper logistics team and also support sales enablement. Alongside my role, I’m studying towards my SCQF Level 6 Diploma in Digital Application Support \/ Operations.Since joining the business, I’ve gained a much better understanding of how different departments work together and how important each role is in supporting customers and keeping operations running smoothly.What Does a Typical Day Look Like as an Apprentice?Every day is different, which is one of the things I enjoy most about my role.My day usually starts by reviewing orders and sharing updates with the wider team. This helps ensure everyone is aligned and aware of any changes or priorities for the day ahead.From there, I support both the logistics and sales enablement teams with a variety of tasks. This can include producing documentation, raising sales and purchase orders, carrying out data entry and checking information to ensure everything is accurate before being processed.Working across different departments has given me valuable insight into how a global trading business operates. It has also shown me how important communication is when information needs to be shared quickly and accurately.The role can be fast-paced, especially when customer requirements or order details change. Staying organised and managing my time effectively helps me keep on top of my workload while maintaining attention to detail.What Have I Learned?One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of communication.When different teams are working together, clear communication helps ensure everyone has the information they need at the right time.I’ve also developed stronger organisational and time management skills. Priorities can change quickly, so being able to adapt and stay focused is essential.Attention to detail is another important skill I’ve developed. Even small errors in documentation or shipment details can have wider consequences, so accuracy is always important.My Advice for Future ApprenticesIf you’re considering an apprenticeship, my biggest piece of advice would be to stay curious and be willing to learn.Ask questions, take opportunities when they come up and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.Every new task is a chance to develop your skills and gain experience.Being proactive, organised and open to learning can help you progress quickly and make the most of your apprenticeship.Why Consider an Apprenticeship?An apprenticeship offers the opportunity to gain practical experience while continuing your education and developing professional skills.For me, it’s provided exposure to different areas of the business and helped me build confidence in a professional environment.At PG Paper, I’ve had the opportunity to work with multiple teams, learn new skills and gain a broader understanding of the paper and packaging industry.For students exploring their options after school, college, or university, becoming an apprentice can be a valuable first step towards a rewarding career.Explore Careers at PG PaperOur Graduate Hub shares career advice, employee stories, industry insights, and opportunities to help students and young professionals learn more about life at PG Paper.Explore more Graduate Hub content to discover where a career in the paper and packaging industry could take you."}
