Back in February of this year, PG Paper discussed predictions regarding the suspected sustainable packaging trends and innovations. It was estimated to be a year of change as many trends were forecast to positively reshape the market.
With consumer demand ever-evolving as well as government legislation adapting, there is a complete drive for companies to implement new technologies. This is ultimately prompting organisations to restrategise.
As we move to the latter months of the year, let us highlight some recent innovative packaging solutions leading across the industry.
Reducing Plastic Usage
PepsiCo’s Quaker Oats brand adopts new paper-based packaging in order to reduce plastic usage.
As the UK’s leading porridge brand, Quaker Oats introduced a new paper-based packaging across its entire porridge pots range at the end of 2023. Although the previous pot component was made of recyclable material, the inner plastic packaging still had to be separated from the card sheath in order to be eligible for recycling.
Representing 47% of the of the UK porridge market, Quaker Oats’ new packaging is set to significantly reduce the distribution of plastic amongst its porridge pots sold across the nation.
Exceeding Targets
Google achieves 100% Plastic-Free Hardware Packaging one year ahead of schedule.
Ahead of their pledge, Google has achieved 100% plastic-free packaging status ahead of its initial goal to eradicate plastic use from its hardware packaging by 2025. They have updated their Plastic-Free Packaging Design Guide to reflect these changes.
Through extensive research and trials for innovative solutions, Google have created packaging for all Pixel, Nest and Fitbit devices to be entirely plastic-free.
The interior packaging features a new moulded fibre pulp partially made from recycled newspaper, ultimately contributing to a circular economy.
According to Packaging World, Google teamed up with Veritiv and Shandong Kaili Specialty Paper Company to create a new paper that is three times stronger and about 70% more durable than the previous version. This innovative paper not only improves packaging durability but also lowers the carbon footprint during transportation, thanks to its reduced weight.
Biodegradable Product and Compostable Packaging
Denver-based company PlantFusion launches a new stand-up pouch format for Organic Powdered Plant Protein.
In July 2024, supplement producer PlantFusion introduced a new ecofriendly packaging for their powdered plant protein. This development introduced a multi-layer, plant-based material that is 100% compostable. Both the pouch and zipper elements are BPI certified as being commercially compostable alongside it’s biodegradable Organic Plant Protein Powder.
Originally selling the product in plastic containers, the company felt compelled to reconsider their packaging to align with their values and product portfolio of plant-based supplements, ultimately resulting in a movement to sustainable solutions.
As of the latest update, the company’s entire organic fermented product line will also be offered in compostable packaging.
“Industry First” for Luxury Brands
Packaging Scotland recently highlighted an innovative “industry first” fibre solution catered towards sustainable alcohol packaging for luxury champagne and whisky brands.
This innovation exhibited by English paper manufacturer, James Cropper showcases a uniquely structured fibre top and base intended to tackle sustainable alternatives to alcoholic beverage packaging.
Business Development Manager Scott Jones commented: “We are dedicated to inventing packaging that doesn’t cost the earth and helps brands and consumers have the very best product experience whilst contributing to a more sustainable future.”
As innovations within luxury food and drinks market progress, this will most likely encourage leading brands to a future of sustainable packaging to keep up with consumer demand.
Conclusion
The packaging industry has achieved remarkable advancements in 2024, fuelled by emerging trends and innovative solutions from leading companies that are driving sustainability across the sector, but there is still a lot more work to be done.
As the push for more sustainable practices intensifies, organisations are increasingly embracing eco-friendly packaging solutions. Looking ahead to 2025, we anticipate a surge in sustainable packaging innovations that will further transform the industry.
