Smurfit Kappa Introduces New Water-Resistant Paper
Dutch leader in paper-based packaging Smurfit Kappa has announced the development of their new, innovative water-resistant paper – AquaStop™. This new product is part of Smurfit Kappa’s new TechniPaper Portfolio, which includes a range of high-performance paper products. AquaStop™ is applied with a special coating during the manufacturing process providing water-resistant qualities while still allowing the product to be fully recycled. The AquaStop™ paper is the latest addition to Smurfit Kappa’s Better Planet Packaging range that includes several sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic packaging.

Voith Paper Announces New Sustainability Program ‘Papermaking for Life’
Global manufacturer of machines for the pulp & paper industry, Voith Paper, has launched a new program that aims to achieve sustainable and efficient paper production. The German tech company plans to invest approximately 100 million euros per year in researching sustainable solutions for the future. In line with the Paris Agreement, Voith hopes to achieve 100% CO2-neutral paper production, decrease fresh water consumption by 90% and boost paper recycling to 90%. Voith has already started implementing sustainability practices into various processes, experiencing success from the outset.
Indian Paper Exports Experience Surge
Good news for the Indian pulp & paper market as exports of paper and paperboard from India have grown in FY22. Paper exports have been on the rise over the past 5 years in India, and the latest reports show that paper exports have risen from 0.66 million tonnes to 2.85 million tonnes since FY17. Exports have grown since 2017 due to several reasons such as:
- Technological investment by Indian paper mills
- Domestic paper companies enhancing their marketing efforts
- Introduction of green technologies

Mondi and Beck Packautomaten Launch Paper for Automated E-Commerce Packaging
Sustainable packaging and paper solutions company Mondi has teamed up with German machine supplier Beck Packautomaten to launch a new paper solution dedicated to the e-commerce sector. The idea behind the project is to introduce a functional paper solution that will positively change e-commerce by replacing plastic packaging with innovative, specific sizes solutions. As consumer demand for high-quality, more sustainable packaging solutions has increased over recent years, Mondi has seen an opportunity to introduce something new to the e-commerce market. The new product is 95% paper and ensures optimal protection due to its high strength and water-resistant attributes.
Kruger Acquires Kamloops Pulp Mill
Canadian paper manufacturer Kruger has announced the acquisition of Domtar’s pulp mill in Kamloops, British Columbia. The Kamloops mill, which produces Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft Pulp (NBSK) and Unbleached Softwood Kraft Pulp, will continue to work with its already existing customer base as well as maintain the current 320 employees who work at the mill. Kruger’s Executive Vice President, Francois D’Amour is delighted with the acquisition, as they look forward to strengthening relationships with Kamloops customer base.
