In the past decade, there has been a fast emergence of anti-plastic shopping bag policies set in place by governments all over the world, and an impressive number of local and national governments have passed bills to forbid or severely limit the use of plastic shopping bags.
Plastic shopping bags are increasingly seen as hazards to the environment and are a threat to humans and animals. These types of bags became ubiquitous in retail shopping, with a lot of consumers hardly thinking about the impact of disposable plastic bags on the environment. The plastic bags have become so cheap, that essentially all retail stores were offering them for free.
Governments around the world have moved towards requiring businesses to participate in environmentally friendly efforts, and on 20 October 2014 the Scottish Parliament passed legislation that requires all retailers to charge a minimum of 5p for each new single-use carrier bag.
An alternative to the single-use carrier bag is Bag Kraft which is used to produce bags for shopping applications. Kraft paper is produced from chemical pulp produced in the kraft process, and all kraft papers can be natural shade or bleached; natural shade paper is heavier duty as bleaching decreases the papers strength.
With the increasing awareness of environmental concerns, most companies are turning to kraft paper as an economically and environmentally friendly solution.
It’s not only retail stores that are providing Kraft paper bags for their consumers. Food wrapping and packaging, such as sandwich or meat wrapping, uses MG and MF Bleached Kraft, and boxes are made using a high grammage, high strength kraft referred to as Kraft Liner Board (KLB).
If more businesses are encouraged to use Kraft products instead of plastic and other materials that are not particular environmentally friendly, we’ll be one step closer to saving the planet!
