What we all hope for when chasing our corporate dream is to be lucky enough to work for a company that best reflects our own values, that the role we undertake fits our career aspirations and that the team we get to work with embodies a true sense of unity and passion. It has now been close to two years since I first joined the PG team and got a chance to work directly with the founders of the company Poonam and Puneet Gupta. During this time I have come to realize just how much I actually respond to and admire the creative and entrepreneurial mindset and spirit that they have both firmly established within PG Paper.
I started my career working at a global Information Technology MNC that is recognized worldwide for its IT, consulting, and business process services. In my first role, I worked with teams from various specialist departments, with each project including upwards of 75 team members. When working in a traditional role such as that, chances are that after the project is completed you will not have really felt the weight of success and failure, the warmth of acknowledgement and feedback, or a full sense of accomplishment and real transformation.
In essence, it is all lost within the landscape of vast numbers. While that role exposed me to international teamwork, global clients and large-scale project handling, it was not until I was firmly settled in my current role at PG that I found a deep understanding of what true accountability, project ownership and a sense of accomplishment meant.
From crazy brainstorming sessions to idea generation, from concept development to project planning, from hitting obstacles to seeing true team spirit at work, from testing your grit and determination to gaining a sense of real achievement, from working across five projects at one time to getting that final contract signed, from each success to each failure – the learning opportunities have been plentiful and I am a better professional and individual for it. If however, I were to attempt to summarise my key learning’s during this time, they would very much be an abstract of the below:
- First, always know and focus on the firm’s purpose – it’s key! Having a clear and defined sense of purpose in all the work that we do as a business and individual is the sure-shot way of ensuring that we generate and add value with our every task.
- Secondly, you need to train your mind to transform the future. Training yourself to say yes to new ideas and opportunities is the only way to unlock the potential and possibilities of a rewarding future. And while you do that, also understand as a basic tenet that constant development is essential, as your talent and skills are your most important resource and that needs to be consistently developed and worked on.
- Thirdly, treat every failure as an opportunity as it teaches you resilience, offers important learnings, direction and focus.
- Next, listen more and don’t assume. When you listen more, you learn more. Period.
Never assume that you know the most in any room as that more than anything else will stop you from actually learning.
Lastly, and more importantly, do take heed of my parting words below:
Multi-tasking is an art, you need to master it
Preparation is the key, don’t go anywhere without it
There is no better spokesperson for you than your self-initiative and hard work
And if just like me, you are ever to find yourself working for an entrepreneur whose business you believe in and spirit you admire, make sure that you give it your best shot and hang in there.
Trust me, it will be a fun roller-coaster where no two days will ever be the same!
