Used for the large-scale production of newspapers, magazines and various other publishing materials, newsprint paper has long been integral to Latin American society. Despite the perception that newsprint is decreasing in popularity due to the shift towards online and social media news consumption, it remains a popular choice for many.
In this week’s blog, we explore this traditional paper product, highlighting the various solutions we offer at PG Paper, as well as the continued importance of newsprint within Latin America.
What is Newsprint Paper?
Newsprint, a cost-effective and lightweight printing paper, has served publishers for years in the production of newspapers, magazines and similar marketing materials. This uncoated paper is manufactured using mechanical, chemical and deinked wood fibres. Newsprint is typically very thin, meaning that it can be produced more economically.
Despite its slim profile, newsprint remains thick enough to allow printing on both sides. Newsprint is most often available in off-white or grey colours; however, newsprint can still be dyed in different colours to suit customer demands. Possessing excellent runnability and high opacity, newsprint paper is a great solution for a wide range of printing materials.
Different Types of Newsprint Paper
When it comes to printing, three main types of newsprint are typically used, all of which we offer as part of our portfolio of printing papers.
Standard Newsprint: The most popular type of newsprint, frequently used by newspaper companies for printing. Standard newsprint is also the thinnest variant available, making it the most cost-effective solution.
Improved Newsprint: A higher quality form of newsprint paper due to its higher thickness and brightness, attained through additional bleaching during manufacturing. This material boasts an attractive finish and appearance, making it suitable for premium printing applications.
High Bright Newsprint: A type of newsprint which has been treated with additional bleach to achieve a greater brightness level. This newsprint solution is used for printing applications that require a more attractive and vibrant visual appeal.
Newsprint and Its Place in Society
Traditional media like newspapers and magazines have historically dominated global mass communication. However, technological advancements have introduced digital communication channels, offering instant connectivity to news, family, and friends. Despite the rise of digital communications, traditional media remains relevant in today’s society. Latest statistics show that approximately 35% of the U.S. population still read printed newspapers, showcasing the demand for newsprint paper still holds in America. Print media is valued for its credibility, reliability, and accessibility, factors that continue to attract a large number of readers in today’s digital age.
Demand for Graphical Paper in Latin America
Latin America produces approximately 32 million tonnes of paper each year across countries including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Chile. Despite the substantial paper production within Latin America, rates of graphical paper production are low in comparison to tissue and packaging products. However, there remains a substantial demand for graphical solutions in Latin America, with one of the most sought-after materials being newsprint paper.
Although technological advancements have shifted the way people consume news and information, forms of paper media such as newspapers and magazines maintain their popularity across Latin America, with many choosing traditional print instead of online sources. The print, newspaper and magazine market in Latin American countries continues to thrive, with projected revenue expected to reach US$3.88 billion in 2024. Although younger demographics tend to prefer digital formats for news consumption, the majority of older demographics remain favourable to conventional means to stay informed.
