Metallized paper is a unique solution that combines the tactile appeal of paper with the shiny visuals of metal. From the packaging to label sector, this distinctive paper solution is becoming more widely used across a variety of industries.
Metallized paper is a product that is coated with a layer of aluminium, which is then applied with a matte or gloss finish. The paper material is applied with this coating to enhance the product’s visual purposes, which is why the popularity of metallized paper has blossomed throughout several sectors. This material’s silver shine and eye-catching appeal have led it to become a key medium for designers, maximising shelf appeal for packaging and labels.
This metallic paper solution is often engineered with enhanced wet-strength, helping it maintain its structural integrity in wet conditions. It is an incredibly durable material, exhibiting high resistance to tearing, puncturing and abrasion. Due to this products high durability and creative offerings, it has become a popular choice for the following applications.
Metallized Paper Uses
From enhancing product packaging to elevating brand aesthetics, metallized paper finds versatile applications across various industries.
Packaging: For products that require high-quality branding and protection against light and moisture, metallized paper is a great choice. It’s commonly seen in the packaging of food items, cigarettes, cosmetics, and luxury goods.
Labels: Personal care and beverage products, including wine and beer bottle labels, are made from metallized paper to stand out on shelves and enhance the product’s luxury appeal.
Publishing: Magazine and catalogue covers, publicity inserts, brochures, and annual reports use metallized paper to make a greater visual impact.
Decorative Purposes: Its ability to be embossed or to exhibit holographic effects makes it a popular choice for decorative applications, including greeting cards and luxury packaging applications.
The Manufacturing Process
The creation of metallized paper involves a complex process that entails various meticulous steps.
Preparation and Pre-Coating: In the initial stage of the manufacturing process, the selection of suitable base paper is crucial, considering factors such as weight, smoothness, and desired qualities. Following this, a thin layer of base varnish is applied to the paper using a varnisher, similar to gravure printing. This process creates an even, smooth surface and removes any imperfections. Subsequently, the pre-coated paper undergoes drying, passing through a drying unit to remove solvents and attain a specific moisture content of around 2-3% before metallization.
Metallization: The next phase involves metallization, where the pre-coated paper is inserted into a vacuum chamber, and air is evacuated to create the optimal environment. Aluminium wire is then fed onto a heated source within the chamber, causing it to melt and vaporize. As the vaporized aluminium molecules rise and condense onto the cool surface of the paper, passing over a chilled roller, an ultra-thin, uniform metallic layer forms, imparting the characteristic shimmering appearance of metallized paper.
Post-Coating and Finishing: Following metallization, the paper undergoes post-coating and finishing processes to enhance its properties and durability. A protective lacquer is applied to safeguard the aluminium layer and make the surface receptive to printing. Additionally, re-moisturization of the paper is carried out to restore its original properties and prevent brittleness caused by moisture removal during the vacuum process. Depending on the intended uses, further treatments such as corona discharge to improve ink adhesion or anti-static coatings to prevent sheet-to-sheet cling may be applied as necessary.
Benefits of Metallized Paper
From enhancing product aesthetics to elevating brand perception, metallized paper offers a host of attributes to many end-use applications.
Striking Visual Appeal: The shiny metallic surface of metallized paper creates a visually striking and premium look, ideal for packaging and labels aiming to stand out and attract consumer attention. This solution is particularly advantageous for products competing in crowded markets or those seeking a premium image.
Printability: Offers great printability, compatible with various techniques like offset, flexographic, and gravure printing. Versatile for incorporating logos, branding, and other information onto packaging or labels. A metallic surface enhances the printed design, creating visually appealing products.
Barrier Properties: Metallized paper acts as a barrier against light, oxygen, moisture, and odours, crucial for protecting packaged contents, especially for sensitive products. This material also helps extend shelf life by shielding from light-induced degradation and moisture loss. Metallized paper prevents odour or flavour transfer, maintaining the integrity of the product.
